BLAcK Metal yoga!

NAMASLAY!!!

ALL LEVELS WELCOME! This is an all levels yoga class with offers for more intermediate students and is 75 minutes. Options will be given for different levels. This class is done in the dark in black light in the back of a bar set to the sounds of the likes of Burzum, Blut Aus Nord, Wolves In The Throne Room, Nachtmystium, Satyricon, Windir, Negura Bunget, Oranssi Pazuzu, Drudkh.... The juxtaposition of a type of music that is seen as all about negativity and darkness, combined with a practice that is known for thousands of years for healing and bringing out the light inside people is what it's all about. We are all darkness and light and one cannot exist without the other. This class explores those two sides.

Yoga instructor Melody Henry has been listening to and going to metal shows since the 80s where she cut her teeth at the sorely missed L'amour club in Brooklyn and CBGB's in NYC. She has been practicing yoga in many different forms since 1991 and has been teaching yoga since 2002. She holds over 500 hours of yoga-specific teacher training and studies and teaches Sanskrit as well as being immersed in consistent study of other esoteric topics and knowledge. Melody also holds multiple certifications in other mediums including traditional Japanese Reiki, personal training, group fitness, kickboxing, Pilates and more. She sometimes still reads tarot and oracle cards for select clients, works with crystal healing and really loves black metal, so why not combine all this Yin and Yang into one amazing amalgam of awesome!

Lucky 13 Saloon is a metal bar located at 644 Sackett Street in Park Slope off 4th avenue in Brooklyn, NY 11217.

Kali (Sanskrit: काली;Telugu: కాళీ; Tamil: காளி; Bengali: কালী), also known as Kalika (Sanskrit: कालिका) is often misunderstood. She is the Hindu goddess associated with empowerment, or shakti (SHAKTI!!!). She is the mighty aspect of the goddess Durga. The name of Kali means the black one and force of time. She is therefore called the Goddess of Time, Change, Power, Creation, Preservation and Destruction. Her earliest appearance is that of a destroyer principally of evil forces. So when I say I have an altar for the goddess of destruction people don't really get it and I understand. But Kali has helped me to destroy my lack of belief in myself, my fears, and many of my worries. It's not just random destruction, though one must be careful with such a powerful force. Sometimes you get what you ask for, tenfold. I am filled with strength and gratitude. In this life THIS was the mother I was handed. I'll take it. JAI JAI KALI MA!!

Modern renditions of Kali are often fierce and can be jarring. I love this one.
